{"id":349,"date":"2015-12-07T14:28:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T14:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/?p=349"},"modified":"2015-12-11T13:34:58","modified_gmt":"2015-12-11T13:34:58","slug":"happy-to-have-the-chart-plotter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/?p=349","title":{"rendered":"Happy to have the chart plotter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday &#8211; 3 December<\/p>\n<div class=\"UFICommentContent\">\n<p><span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\">You know how it can be &#8211; for every relaxing day you can expect a non-relaxing one when transiting on a sailboat. \u00a0Today we transited a short but hairy 10 miles\/16 km with big wind (25 &#8211; 30 knots) and choppy water through\u00a0a very narrow difficult channel with white water rapids on one side\u00a0and within 25 feet of the grass (land) on the other. \u00a0 Through all this we also\u00a0had to line up on a set of range markers to ensure we stayed in the deeper water of the channel while not hitting the\u00a0channel markers. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>(An explanation of range markers\u00a0by the US Coast Guard: \u00a0navigational a<\/i><em>ids, which are usually shore-mounted, come in pairs to help the vessel operator maintain a straight and safe course within a navigable channel. Each member of the pair is separated from the next in distance and elevation, with the one in front shorter than the one behind it. When the two appear to be vertically stacked, the vessel is on the range line.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, while staying between the channel markers, keeping reds to starboard, greens to port, being bounced around in the wind and choppy water, figuring out which reds and greens were for us to follow and which were marking other channels, we also had to focus on the boards ahead, steering so the two boards were vertically stacked in order to stay in the channel.<\/p>\n<p>Through out the transit Bob also tracked our progress with the chart platter which also shows the channel and he was especially thankful for that today. \u00a0The channel markers were confusing and the channel was difficult to make out visually so\u00a0the electronics really helped.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after Jekyll Creek, where\u00a0we thankfully had no problem with depth, with the strong current still pushing us along, we passed under a bridge and immediately into the marina.<\/p>\n<p><span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-378 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dreamtime2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>While still under the bridge and as\u00a0we approached the dock Bob put the boat in reverse at least 150 yards\/137 meters before the dock and &#8220;hard&#8221; reverse 30 yards \/ 3 meters before the dock, wondering if the boat would actually stop in time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P1020632.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-387 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P1020632-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020632\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P1020632-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P1020632-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>He skidded in with an ice hockey-like stop and executed a perfect docking. It was amazingly smooth and Christina and the dockhands were oblivious to the level of\u00a0challenge Bob was experiencing. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime-at-dock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-376 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime-at-dock-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dreamtime at dock\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime-at-dock-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime-at-dock-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Dreamtime-at-dock.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The winds are expected to be even stronger tomorrow so we already planned to stay here for 2 nights. \u00a0Sunday is expected to be like today, so we knew it would be doable. \u00a0But&#8230;..after talking with the dock master we learned\u00a0St. Andrew&#8217;s Sound, which we will be crossing when we leave, is even more exposed and choppy than St. Simon&#8217;s (taking you to the edge of the ocean). Hmmmm&#8230;. maybe we&#8217;ll stay another day.<\/p>\n<p>Monday looks to be a good day for weather but in reviewing the tides and sunrise time, a departure on Monday would have to be before sunrise and would require transiting the more tricky part(s) with the sun in our eyes&#8230;.soooooo&#8230;. we decided to make a 2 night\u00a0stop into a 4 night stop. \u00a0We&#8217;ll leave Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-375 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ChristinaBobDudley-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ChristinaBobDudley\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ChristinaBobDudley-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ChristinaBobDudley-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ChristinaBobDudley.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We ended up being docked just in front of\u00a0<em>s\/v Belle Bateaux\u00a0<\/em>a 44&#8242; Gozzard.
