dismal swamp\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dismal-swamp-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dismal-swamp-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sunday, 1 November<\/p>\n<p>Working backward from the time the Deep Creek Lock was scheduled to open, we determined what time would be best for departing the marina in Portsmouth without creating too much \u201cwait\u201d time.\u00a0 We untied from the dock around 0815 making our way to the first bridge, Gilmerton Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>We tried to take our time so we wouldn&#8217;t get through the bridge and to the lock too early and be forced\u00a0 to mill around with many other\u00a0boats waiting for the scheduled lock opening.<\/p>\n<p>But, because so many boats were behind us at the bridge, the bridge tender waited until more boats arrived to the bridge which meant\u2026.. we were milling around the bridge with a few boats trying not to hit each other waiting for the bridge to open. \u00a0(oh well, the best laid plans&#8230;..) \u00a0But all went well with our first bridge opening and on we went.<\/p>\n<p>A few miles down the Waterway we had the option of choosing Route 1 which carries a bit more commercial traffic or Route 2 through the Dismal Swamp which would be more scenic and quiet.\u00a0 We chose Route 2 and made our way down the canal, leaving all evidence of industrial activity behind and enjoying the quiet serenity of the canal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Bald-eagle-285x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bald eagle\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Bald-eagle-285x300.jpg 285w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Bald-eagle-972x1024.jpg 972w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Bald-eagle.jpg 1855w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were greeted by an American Bald Eagle sitting in a tree as we passed by.\u00a0 Neither of us had seen a Bald Eagle for quite a long time, and enjoyed witnessing its splendor.<\/p>\n<p>We approached the Deep Water Lock, again sooner\u00a0than expected, and again milled around with the other boats.\u00a0 We prepared our fenders and fender board for the wall, and waited.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-first-lock-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"151102 first lock\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-first-lock-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-first-lock-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lock master opened the lock and all the boats proceeded in an orderly fashion.\u00a0 As this lock is the low one, we had to hand our bow and stern lines up to the lock master high above us.\u00a0 He secured them on bollards and we were instructed to hold our ends, and get ready to pull them in as we rise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-lock-risen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-179 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-lock-risen-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"151102 - lock risen\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-lock-risen-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-lock-risen-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a process to get all 9 boats into the lock and secured.\u00a0 But once done the lock master started the filling process, and more and more water started to flow under our keel, and the boat slowly lifted to be even with the land.\u00a0 Once the lock was opened, the boats filed out in order and we pushed off the wall with our boat hooks, pulled our lines aboard, and headed down the canal.<\/p>\n<p>We left the state of Virginia and entered North Carolina with a welcome sign posted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-186\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"151102\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dreamtime-rafted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dreamtime-rafted-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"151102 - dreamtime rafted\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dreamtime-rafted-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-dreamtime-rafted-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We proceeded down the Dismal Swamp Canal and found the wall which is free of charge at the Dismal Swamp Visitor Center.\u00a0 This dock is long enough for 3 or 4 boats to tie up alongside.\u00a0 However, the normal practice is for boats to raft to each other and provide safe dockage for even more.\u00a0 (Another first for us.)\u00a0 As soon as we were secured to the dock on our port side, another sailboat pulled up alongside our starboard and used our cleats to tie up next to us.\u00a0 Then another on their starboard side.\u00a0 The same was true for the other two boats on the wall and by nightfall there were nine boats tied up with each other.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-9-rafted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/dreamtime-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/151102-9-rafted-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"151102 -
